The Fields Of Home

There is always something special
about this time of year
the anticipation of Christmas
takes me back to my childhood

I remember all the presents
Santa would bring
how the cookies and milk
would be half gone

decorating the Christmas tree
listening to all the Christmas songs
the excitement of going through
the Sears Christmas Catalog

the last day of school
before Christmas vacation
the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service
at my Dad’s church

my brother and I setting
our alarm clock for 3 AM
trying to hide it so Mom and Dad
wouldn’t find it (they always did)

unwrapping all the presents
on Christmas morning
there was nothing better at Christmas
than the fields of home
