The Drum That Beats Within Me ~ Walt Page, The Tennessee Poet

As a rock and roll drummer
For over 60 years now
There is a constant beat within me
My rhythm of life
But not the beat of my heart
Everything I write has a beat
Everything I do is done with a beat
My drum is both internal and external
A lot of my drumming is self taught
By listening to
And playing along with
Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Cozy Cole
On Topsy, Sandy Nelson on Let There Be Drums,
And Joe Morello on Take 5.
I can’t walk by the kitchen sink
Or washing machine without stopping
To do a little finger drumming.
I sold my drum set about 15 years ago
And not a day goes by
That I regret that decision.
One of these days
I’ll buy a snare drum and
Get my hands back in shape.
I love my practice pads
But they don’t have the sound
Or the feel of a classic snare drum.
A drummer without a drum
Is like a preacher without a congregation.

  1. The way this is written vaguely reminds me of Walt Whitman.

As well, I always wanted to play the drums. That must have been a blast. This is encouraging me to take a shot with it one of these days.

You should definitely get back into it. It’s never too late. ❤ ❤
