I see them too often
Men and women, alone or in small groups
Some old, some young
Just standing around or meandering
With no purpose, no motivation
And I wonder
Is this what it’s like
To be alone and forgotten?
The only meaning left
In their lives
Seems to be survival
Just existing
They live on the streets
Keeping each other company
Until they each make their way
To their safe haven for the evening
And I always say to myself,
There, but for the Grace of God, go I”

  1. Walt, you’re such a classic in your taste yet so contemporary in your style. Truly a musician in every way – look at the emotions you arouse with your words! This is so painful, it rendered me unable to process my feelings for a while. Gosh…so true and so sad. We may write about beautiful things and the bright side in poetry, watch a funny programme on TV, but this is the cruel reality, this is the true state of the world…
    Gem of a poet!
