Drum Battle With The Devil – A Poem By Walt Page, The Tennessee Poet

A Sequel to Drink With The Devil

It wasn’t long before the devil came back
after we met at the bar
She smiled and said quite casually
“I heard you play the drums that night
you had a drink with me”

“Get to the point my evil friend
I see those drumsticks up your sleeve”
She smiled and winked
“I know I can’t beat your poetry
but I came back to challenge you
to a drum battle if you dare”

“I accept your challenge, your evilness
just tell me when and where”
“We’ll set up a stage on New Years Eve
and we’ll do it by the light of the moon”
“That’s fine with me, but just be warned
that’s the night of the howling wolves,
and they love to howl to the beat of my drums
and will watch you meet your fate
So now’s the time to change your mind
before it’s way too late”
I’ll be here on New Year’s Eve old man
so get your wrists in shape
I haven’t lost a drum battle yet
so it’s you who’ll meet your fate”

The stage was set
drums head to head
Excitement filled this Tennessee night
as the wolves began to howl

When the clouds cleared the crowd cheered
The Tennessee Poet at his drums
Facing the devil on hers
“Challengers first”
The Poet smiled, and
The Devil began to play
A simple beat without any flare
And the crowd just sat and stared

“What’s wrong with you your evilness?
Is that the best you have?”
“What I played is all I have
I came to learn from you”

A full moon can be mystical
As it proved to us that night
I payed the solos from my past
And rocked the moonlit stage
Classic Wipeout rocked the air
Caravan and Whiplash too
All I learned from watching the best
Krupa, Rich, Bonham and Peart

I watched her pick up her drumsticks
She knew knew it was the end
But the Devil and I had become good friends
That night to the beat of my drums
