It’s Three In The Morning – A Poem By Walt Page, The Tennessee Poet

It’s three in the morning
And I’m still awake
It’s three in the morning
I need something to take

I need an escape
That doesn’t feel fake
I need words to write
I’ve been up all night

It’s three in the morning
And everything aches
I hear sounds and rumbles
I see spiders and snakes

I’ve been awake shaking hands
With the Father, Son and Holy Ghost
They were happy to see me
As they headed for the Coast

It’s three in the morning
And I’m still awake
I’m always like this
It’s just who I am

I’m a tired old drummer
From a rock and roll band
I need to medicate my mind
With pills I can’t find

I no longer give a damn
I just want to rock and roll
The only thing that helps
Is music and poetry that frees my soul

It’s now four in the morning
The dogs need to go out
And I need to find something
To write about

I need to hear those electric guitars
I need to play drums and go for it all
Over and over
It’s the same everyday

It’s whatever o’clock
And I’m still awake

  1. You mentioned the three
    that I admire the most,
    as I caught the last
    slow train for the coast.
    The Great Spirit, Father, Son
    the three in the morning
    big three in one.
    I can remember
    that I cried
    when I heard
    that for me he died.
    I drove my ’57 Chevy
    for the widowed bride
    in the witching hour
    to the edge of reality
on the dark side of town.
    A void devoid of power
… and taken for a ride.
    Thank goodness
    that the King
    with the thorny crown,
    if not time and tide,
    is on our side.

      1. It’s actually better for my wife with my up and down. She works at a local hospital from 5am to 1:30 pm. It’s a 45 minute drive so she gets up at 3 am to leave at 4. She goes to bed between 7 and 8 pm. I stay in the living room in my trusty recliner, along with 5 of our 10 rescue dogs 😊. I am blessed to have her. πŸ˜ŠπŸ’›

  2. Wonderful piece, but sorry it’s at the price of pain and sleep!! Happy you ended up with this as a trophy, My Friend!!
Find something super boring on TV! That always seems to put me to sleep, even with the noise! You’re in my thoughts and prayers, Walt!!!
